The R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant continues to offer much-needed support to millions of unemployed South Africans. But each month, beneficiaries encounter common frustrations and uncertainties. To assist our readers, Pondoland Times has compiled the top 10 most frequently asked questions about the SRD grant and provided clear answers.

  1. Why is my SRD R370 application still pending?
Pending status usually means your details are still being verified by government databases (like SARS, UIF, and NSFAS). This process happens monthly. If your application remains pending for longer than a month, double-check that your ID and contact details are correct.
  2. How do I appeal a rejected R370 SRD application?
Visit the official DSD appeals website at https://srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals. You must lodge an appeal within 30 days of the rejection. Follow the prompts to submit your appeal using your ID and phone number.
  3. When will I receive my R370 grant this month?
SASSA releases SRD payment dates monthly. Payment timelines depend on whether you use a bank account or retailer pickup. Check our updated article here: [Insert link to SASSA payment schedule article].
  4. Can I update my banking details for SRD grant payments?
Yes. Log into https://srd.sassa.gov.za, scroll down to “How do I change my banking details?” and follow the instructions. Ensure your phone number is active, as an OTP will be sent for verification.
  5. Why was my application declined even though I’m unemployed?
Many rejections are due to conflicting information found in other databases. For example, receiving UIF, NSFAS, or having income over R624 per month may cause automatic declines.
  6. How do I check my SRD grant status without airtime or data?
    Use the following methods:
  • WhatsApp: Send “hi” to 082 046 8553 and follow the menu.
  • USSD: Dial 1347737# on your phone.
  • Visit https://srd.sassa.gov.za and check status online.
  1. Can I collect the R350 grant without a bank account?
Yes. You can choose to collect your grant at major retailers like Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and USave. You’ll need your ID and the cellphone number used during application.
  2. What should I do if someone else is collecting my R350?
Report the matter to SASSA immediately. You may also need to open a case at your nearest SAPS office. Changing your phone number or bank details can prevent future fraud.
  3. How long does the SRD grant last — will it be extended again?
As of June 2025, the SRD grant is extended until March 2026. Government continues to explore options for making it permanent or integrating it into a broader Basic Income Support system.
  4. Can I apply for the R370 SRD grant if I receive a child grant?
Yes, the SRD grant is separate. Receiving a child support grant does not disqualify you from applying for SRD, as long as you meet the income and age criteria.

BONUS TIP:
Avoid SRD scams. Never pay anyone to “fast-track” your application or give your OTP to strangers. SASSA does not charge any fees for applications.
