Born on June 19, 1925, in Benoni, South Africa, Nzo’s life was marked by his unwavering dedication to the fight against apartheid and his tireless efforts to promote democracy and equality. As a young man, Nzo received missionary education in the Eastern Cape and later enrolled at the University of Fort Hare, where he became involved in student politics and joined the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League.
Nzo’s career was marked by numerous milestones, including his appointment as the first black health inspector in South Africa, his election as chairperson of the ANC branch in Alexandra, and his organization of the Alexandra bus boycotts in 1957. His commitment to the liberation movement led to his arrest and imprisonment on several occasions, including a five-month sentence for not having a residence permit.
In 1969, Nzo was elected Secretary-General of the ANC, a position he held until 1991. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in promoting the ANC’s mission and values, both domestically and internationally. Nzo’s leadership and diplomatic skills were instrumental in facilitating dialogue between the ANC and the National Party government, ultimately contributing to the country’s transition to democracy.
After the first democratic elections in 1994, Nzo was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Nelson Mandela, a position he held until 1999. Throughout his career, Nzo received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the liberation movement, including the Order of Luthuli in Gold.
