Cape Town’s taxi industry has been rocked by another killing after former CATA public relations officer, Andile Seyamo, 61, was gunned down outside his Browns Farm home on Tuesday morning. The murder comes less than a week after deputy chairperson Mnikeli Mgope was shot dead at Nyanga taxi rank, raising fears of escalating violence.

According to police, Seyamo was attacked while getting into his vehicle on Dlephu Street, Browns Farm. Unidentified gunmen opened fire before fleeing the scene.
The incident follows months of tension between the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA).

CATA spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi voiced alarm at the targeting of senior members.
“Our primary concern as CATA’s leadership is the continuous targeting of our administrators,” Sityebi said. “Since the beginning of this year, several members of our administration have fallen victim to gun violence, and this is deeply troubling. I am also fearing for my life as I observe the dangers surrounding us.”
The Western Cape Government has since announced a 30-day shutdown of routes connecting Somerset West and Khayelitsha, effective Wednesday, in a bid to curb violence.
