From Home Ovens to Mall Pop-Ups

What began as a quiet passion for food has now grown into a flourishing business. Busi Gwentshu, the woman behind the oven, admits that baking wasn’t her first love. “I was more into cooking, but baking was always around me,” she recalls. “At my grandmother’s and aunt’s houses, we’d often bake scones and other treats. Later, I started watching baking shows and trying out the recipes on my own.”

After returning from Cape Town, Busi officially registered her business in 2018 as Yunnbell Cakes and Eatery. However, on the advice of a friend, she focused first on the baking side. And what a sweet decision that turned out to be.

Popular Pop-Up in Bhaca Mall

To meet growing demand, Busi now runs a weekly pop-up cake stall every Thursday and Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM in front of Sportscene at Bhaca Mall. From classic sponges to bold, experimental flavours, each item is a tribute to Busi’s creative touch and her belief in quality at affordable prices.

Giving Back to the Community

Beyond just baking, Busi is committed to uplifting others. “There are many young people in our area who are unemployed but have finished matric,” she explains. “I bring them in, teach them baking skills, and help them gain experience.”

Yunnbell Cakes also donates to causes such as cancer awareness initiatives, local fashion shows, and beauty pageants. “I want to be more than a business—I want to be a community partner,” says Busi.
