Stellenbosch FC Falls Short in Quest for Carling Cup

Date:

Stellenbosch FC faced heartbreak in their bid to add the Carling Cup to their recent triumph in the inaugural Carling Knockout, as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against the Carling All-Stars at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The match got off to an intense start when Antonio van Wyk’s early attempt hit the post, setting the tone for an action-packed encounter. However, it was the All-Stars who broke the deadlock, with Mfundo Vilakazi capitalizing on a free-kick in the early stages, taking advantage of the wet and slippery conditions to slip the ball past Stellies’ goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

The All-Stars extended their lead soon after, with Ashley Du Preez converting a penalty after Thabo Moloisane was controversially adjudged to have fouled him in the box. Stellenbosch FC faced an uphill battle but regrouped after a brief lull in the rain, coming close to narrowing the gap through Andre de Jong’s header and Fawaaz Basadien’s shot hitting the crossbar directly from a corner.

Despite their efforts, a goal ruled out for a foul on All-Stars’ goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune added to Stellenbosch’s frustration. The veteran goalkeeper showcased his skills again with an acrobatic save on the stroke of half-time to deny Devin Titus, maintaining the All-Stars’ two-goal advantage at the break.

Stellenbosch FC carried their attacking intent into the second half, with Iqraam Rayners hitting the upright after dispossessing Khune. The challenge became even tougher when Athenkosi Mcaba received a red card shortly after the hour mark for a mistimed challenge on the touchline.

Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage, Stellenbosch FC continued to press forward, testing Khune with free-kicks from Basadien. Mervin Boji managed to pull one back at the death from close range, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as the All-Stars secured a 2-1 victory.

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker acknowledged the challenges faced by his side, expressing pride in their fighting spirit despite falling short in the Carling Cup final. The All-Stars, on the other hand, celebrated their victory and showcased their resilience in withstanding Stellenbosch’s late surge.

The Carling Cup final delivered an enthralling spectacle for football fans, highlighting the competitive nature of South African football on a national stage.
