As South Africa marks Women’s Month, the Speaker of Matatiele Local Municipality, Cllr Nonzwakazi Ngwanya, has shared a personal story of resilience and determination, encouraging women to persevere despite challenges.
Background
Born and raised in the rural village of Mvenyane, Ward 21, Cllr Ngwanya’s path was shaped by the everyday struggles of rural life. She began her schooling at Upper Mvenyane Primary before moving on to Mvenyane High School. Like many young women in underdeveloped communities, she faced the harsh reality of limited opportunities after completing her studies.
Journey to Leadership
After graduating in Public Relations at Oval College, Ngwanya returned home to find scarce work opportunities. Her early career included working with ABET Gxebe before pursuing teaching studies at Nelson Mandela University.
In 2008, her political journey began, and by 2011 she became a PR Councillor. She later led the Communications and Special Programmes Unit and, in 2016, served as Portfolio Head for Budget and Treasury. In 2021, she was elected as the Speaker of Matatiele Local Municipality.
She credits municipal support for further skills training, including a Certificate Programme in Management Development (CPMD) and other short courses that strengthened her leadership capacity.
Inspiring Women During Women’s Month
Cllr Ngwanya said her journey shows that “nothing in life comes easily, but perseverance carries great rewards.” She emphasised that self-belief and commitment enable women to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
“Never give up,” she urged, “for in your endurance lies your victory.”
