The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners concluded the Intercountry Learning Workshop on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders in Southern Africa on 3 November 2025. The event, held from 1 to 3 November, brought together delegates from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa to tackle challenges in neurological health.
What Happened
The workshop emphasized that more than 4 million people in the African Region live with active epilepsy, many still lacking access to timely diagnosis and treatment. It served as a platform to accelerate the Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP) and strengthen regional efforts.
Delegates reviewed progress, shared lessons learned, and identified priorities to improve care, treatment, and prevention of epilepsy and neurological disorders.
Community Impact
The initiative showed an important step toward making epilepsy and neurological disorders a public health priority in Southern Africa. Through collaboration, countries worked to reduce stigma, expand treatment access, and build stronger health systems to ensure better health outcomes for millions of people.
