From 4 to 7 December, the 27th Moscow International Book Fair brought global writers to Gostiny Dvor, and South Africa was strongly represented. A delegation of 12 South African authors, supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), attended the event to promote local literature and build new international links.
The delegation participated in panel discussions, book signings and cultural exchanges. Their presence emphasized the depth, diversity and energy of South African storytelling across languages and genres.
Strong International Interest in South African Writing
Author Vonani Bila described the fair as “one of the best organised book events.” He said international readers showed deep interest in South Africa’s literary traditions, multilingual works and cultural heritage. According to Bila, this engagement signals growing opportunities for South African authors in global markets.
Fellow writer Nomawele Njongo said the fair confirmed the value of expanding South Africa’s literary reach. She emphasised the need for more translated works to make local stories accessible to Russian readers.
“I am grateful to be here and witness the love for literature, culture and heritage. People truly appreciate South African writing,” she said.
Delegation Welcomed Warmly by Russian Readers
Author Danile Mohlamme also praised the strong reception from Russian audiences. “We received a wonderful welcome. Russia showed real interest in our books, craft, art and languages,” he said.
The positive response stressed the demand for authentic African narratives in international markets. It also underscored the role of cultural exchange in strengthening ties between South Africa and global literary communities.
A Growing Platform for South African Literature
DSAC said participation in global fairs forms part of a broader effort to support South African authors and expand their international footprint. The department noted that global platforms help showcase local voices and encourage new publishing partnerships.
