On the 3rd of October 2025, Nyandeni Local Municipality’s Integrated Development Planning Manager, Dr Aseza Soganga, has achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work from the University of Fort Hare, recognising her groundbreaking research on how social enterprises can reduce youth unemployment in the OR Tambo District Municipality.
What Happened
Soganga’s doctoral thesis, titled “An appraisal of the employment-oriented social enterprises in addressing youth unemployment in the OR Tambo District Municipality, Eastern Cape”, examined how social enterprises can empower young people. Her research assessed challenges faced by youth-led enterprises, evaluated government support systems, and developed a framework to promote youth growth and development.
Her academic journey was guided by Professor T. Nomngcoyiya and supported by years of professional experience at Nyandeni Municipality. The study’s findings demonstrated that social enterprises offer a sustainable path toward curbing youth unemployment and advancing inclusive economic development.
