MEC for Social Development, Bukiwe Fanta, on the 1st of October led the Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme (ICROP) in Ndakeni Village. The initiative aims to reduce child poverty, fight malnutrition, and empower women with knowledge about their rights and those of their children.
WHAT HAPPENED
The ICROP outreach follows findings from the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) report on child poverty and malnutrition, as well as the Food and Nutrition Security Survey, which revealed that 63.5% of South African households face food insecurity, with 17.5% experiencing severe shortages.
The programme delivered nutrition support, child-focused interventions, and awareness sessions, underlining that food security is not just about having enough to eat but ensuring healthy growth and development for children.

Speaking at Ndakeni, MEC Bukiwe Fanta said the province was committed to confronting child hunger head-on.
“We cannot allow malnutrition to rob our children of their future. Through ICROP, we are taking practical steps to support families, protect children, and educate communities on their rights.”
