On 06 October 2025, the Umzimvubu Local Municipality officially launched the construction of the Sivumela Access Road in Ward 24. The 6.5-kilometre project, awarded to Xolweni Project and Trading, is set to last six months and will create over ten jobs for local residents.
What Happened
The municipality held a formal handover ceremony in Ward 24 to signal the beginning of the roadworks. This new route will connect two rural villages that have struggled with poor access for years especially during heavy rains.
Many residents attended the event, welcoming the project as a long-overdue step toward better mobility and basic service delivery.
Official Response
Councillor Nodali, who led the ceremony, spoke directly about the project’s benefits for the community.
“Today we are here to officially hand over this road that links two villages which were not easily accessible before,” said Councillor Nodali.
“This project is important because it improves connectivity, promotes local economic development, and shows our municipality’s commitment to improving residents’ lives.”
He also outlined the municipality’s plan to roll out more infrastructure projects in remote areas.
Community Impact
This road project is expected to reduce transport delays and support small business activity in the region. It will also encourage future investment by making the area more accessible.
Crucially, the municipality confirmed that the contractor will prioritise local labour. At least ten community members will be employed during the six-month construction period.
The project aligns with Umzimvubu’s broader effort to upgrade access roads across underdeveloped wards.
