Siphe Mkokelwa, a talented musician and educator from Pondoland in the Eastern Cape, is celebrating his recent success and the award he attributes to God’s blessings. His journey from a rural background to achieving recognition in the music industry is an inspiring story of faith, perseverance, and dedication.
In an exclusive interview, Siphe shared that his music video, Konke Okuhle (meaning “All is Well”), is deeply rooted in his upbringing in the natural beauty of Pondoland. “I am a rural boy from Pondoland, and my video is full of nature,” Siphe explains. “The song is a praise to the Lord for all the great things He has done in my life, especially for blessing me with this award.”
Born into a Christian family, Sipheâs musical journey began at an early age in the church, where singing was an integral part of daily life. “We would always sing before we pray and before we sleep,” he recalls. Initially a backing vocalist, Siphe worked with Siyanda Dyonase before deciding to step out on his own and record his debut album. His music, he says, is deeply personal, drawing from his life experiences and his spiritual journey.
“I write music about my journey and my life,” Siphe adds, emphasizing the importance of using one’s own story to inspire others.
Being a proud son of AmaMpondo, Siphe holds his roots close to his heart. “To me, being a Pondo Son means exactly who I am,” he says with pride. “Your background and your past don’t determine your future. Stay positive, keep knocking, and don’t quit on education. You will need your education alongside your talent. Just like me, I am a graduate who is also a musician, and itâs possible to achieve your dreams.”
Siphe is not only a musician but also a passionate educator. He has a deep desire to impact the lives of young people and inspire them to pursue both their education and talents. “I want the youth to be motivated,” Siphe explains. “The God who made it happen for me can do it for them too. I donât want to do well just on the stage, but I want the people who saw me struggle in my early years to be encouraged and know that they too can succeed.”
While Siphe is keeping some details under wraps, he hints at exciting upcoming events and urges fans to stay connected via his social media platforms for updates. “We are still working on some upcoming events, so please keep checking my pages for the latest news,” he advises.
As an artist, Siphe often receives messages from aspiring musicians seeking advice on how to break into the industry. His advice is simple yet powerful: “In my genre, you cannot do Gospel music without knowing God. Talent alone doesnât work here,” he says. “It is possible to make it big right here at home. We all start somewhere, and in AmaMpondo, there are great platforms like Pondoland Times that introduce local talent. From there, step by step, you gain exposure.”
Siphe also offers his support to those looking to pursue music, stating that he is available to help others with information about the music industry and recording.
For those looking to enjoy his music, Sipheâs tracks are available on all major digital music platforms. Fans can also follow him on social media under the name Siphe Mkokelwa for updates and more.
“I am grateful for all the support throughout my journey, and I am truly blessed by this award,” Siphe concludes. “Thank you for your continued support, and may God continue to bless us all.”
