The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has cautioned applicants for the R370 Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant to use only cell phone numbers registered in their own names.
SASSA says this ensures that each application can be verified, monitored, and processed correctly. Using another person’s number could result in failed verification or delayed payments.
Why Verification Matters
According to the agency, verification helps prevent fraud and ensures that the grant reaches the rightful beneficiary. When the banking details do not match the applicant’s identity, the system automatically rejects the payment.
SASSA confirmed that once verification and bank confirmation are complete, the grant will be processed during the next payment cycle.
“Verification is crucial to fighting fraudulent applications and ensuring that the right people receive assistance,” the agency stated.
How to Apply for the R370 SRD Grant
To apply for the special SRD COVID-19 grant, follow these steps:
- Visit the official SASSA SRD website at https://srd.sassa.gov.za.
- Choose South African ID Holders or Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders.
- Follow the prompts and provide all required details accurately.
- Ensure that both your cell phone number and bank account are registered under your name.
- Wait for an SMS notification for verification or additional instructions.
For assistance, applicants can contact SASSA’s toll-free number: 0800 60 10 11, available Monday to Friday during working hours.
Key Reminder for Applicants
SASSA urges all beneficiaries to provide correct and verifiable information to avoid delays. Fraudulent or incomplete applications will not be processed.
The agency reiterated that no fraudulent SRD application will pass scrutiny, as robust verification systems are in place.
