The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced that it will continue reviewing the grants of targeted beneficiaries suspected of failing to disclose alternative sources of income. This intensified verification process is part of efforts to ensure that social grants are paid only to eligible recipients.
According to a statement issued by the agency, the review process specifically targets individuals who appear active in the labour market or whose incomes exceed the means threshold—particularly where this information was not disclosed during the original application or after changes in financial circumstances.
“SASSA has only amended the payment schedule for those under review,” said SASSA National Spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi. “No grant has been suspended yet, but failure to present oneself for a review may lead to suspension and ultimately, cancellation.”
Beneficiaries under review must report to their local SASSA offices to confirm whether they remain eligible for assistance. Failure to comply within two months could lead to suspension, and if there is no response within one additional month, the grant will be permanently cancelled. A fraud investigation may follow in such cases.
SASSA reminded beneficiaries that it is a legal obligation to disclose all sources of income and to update their contact details regularly. Many recipients fail to receive review notifications due to outdated contact information, which reduces their chances of avoiding grant suspension.
In its zero-tolerance stance on fraud, SASSA also warned that any internal collusion between officials and beneficiaries will result in disciplinary and legal action.
Beneficiaries still using green barcoded ID books are also urged to upgrade to smart ID cards due to the higher risk of identity fraud associated with outdated documents.
For inquiries, SASSA encourages affected individuals to call the toll-free line on 0800 60 1011, email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za, or visit their nearest local office.
