The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has pledged full support to families impacted by the recent floods that devastated the OR Tambo District in the Eastern Cape, claiming at least 49 lives.

The floods, which caused widespread damage and displacement earlier this month, triggered an emergency response from various government departments, with SASSA leading efforts to provide immediate relief under its Social Relief of Distress (SRD) programme.

SASSA Chief Executive Officer Mr Themba Matlou said the agency was operating on three active sites where approximately 229 displaced residents were receiving three nutritious meals daily.

In addition to food provision, the agency has distributed 229 hygiene vanity packs and five baby care packs, reinforcing its commitment to urgent humanitarian aid.

“Social Relief of Distress is a temporary provision of assistance for people in such dire material need that they are unable to meet their families’ most basic needs,” said Matlou.

To assist families in transitioning from emergency shelters to more stable living conditions, SASSA has developed a Disengagement Plan. This plan includes the distribution of two-ply blankets and a mattress for each individual, along with cash vouchers to address short-term financial needs. In a further effort to restore normalcy, school uniforms are being provided to affected learners to promote educational continuity.

In recognition of the trauma experienced by grieving families, SASSA will also provide two vouchers per household to help address immediate funeral-related expenses.

SASSA’s intervention forms part of a broader collaboration with provincial and municipal partners, working under the social development cluster to coordinate aid and recovery efforts.

Mr Matlou extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He further thanked stakeholders, partners, and community members who continue to support the relief work on the ground.

“We are working very closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that maximum support is given to the distressed families,” he said.

SASSA encouraged affected residents to make contact through local councillors or designated relief sites to ensure assistance reaches those in need.
