SASSA shares worry over low number of child support grant top up beneficiaries

Date:

The top-up, which became effective in June, followed a cabinet decision several months earlier to assist families with children that were left as orphans due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) said that there were only 16,000 beneficiaries of the child support grant top-up so far.

The low number of beneficiaries caused worry as more children should be benefiting from the grant top-up.

The government added another R240 to the R480 child support grant to help families who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances because of the pandemic.

This brings the child support grant to a total of R720.

SASSA CEO Busisiwe Memela-Khambula said that she was worried as the number of beneficiaries remained low.
