What Happened in Pietermaritzburg
The programme opened with a gathering outside the Office of the Premier. Participants then held a peaceful walk to Pietermaritzburg City Hall to emphasize the urgent need to end Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
Throughout the day, government departments, including SASSA, presented their GBVF intervention plans. The focus remained on strengthening institutional responses, improving accountability, and building trust between frontline workers and communities.
SASSA KZN’s Role in the Campaign
SASSA KZN participated to support efforts that protect vulnerable groups who rely on social assistance. The agency outlined the need to prevent GBVF incidents committed by frontline workers and to reinforce systems that safeguard clients at service points.
Officials emphasised the importance of:
- strict accountability processes,
- safer service environments, and
- stronger partnerships with NGOs and community groups.
Why This Matters
The campaign aims to identify what must change within institutions to reduce GBVF. It also seeks to build paths that strengthen justice processes and ensure survivors receive proper support. These interventions are critical for communities relying on social services and for frontline departments expected to serve with care and integrity.
