Protecting Beneficiaries From Online Fraud

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued a public advisory to help grant beneficiaries identify fake vacancies and misleading news posters circulating online.

With the increase in online scams targeting vulnerable communities, SASSA has urged beneficiaries to remain vigilant and take specific steps to verify information before acting on it.

Key Indicators to Identify Fake Information

SASSA outlined several critical measures for verifying the authenticity of any communication claiming to be from the agency:

  • Check for Proper Logos:
Fake posters often use distorted, outdated, or poorly replicated versions of the official SASSA logo.
  • Look for Authenticity Badges:
Only interact with official social media accounts that display a verified blue tick mark, confirming the page’s authenticity.
  • Confirm the Source:
Beneficiaries should verify that the information comes directly from SASSA’s official website or their verified social media platforms.
  • Avoid Shortened Links:
Spammers frequently use shortened links (e.g., bit.ly) that could lead to malicious websites. Always ensure links direct to official SASSA domains.
  • Check the Website URL:
Official SASSA websites end with .gov.za. Fraudulent websites often mimic legitimate ones but have different domain endings.

Official Websites and Contact Channels

SASSA emphasized that all official information will be available through:

For any queries or to report suspected scams, beneficiaries can contact the toll-free number: 0800 60 10 11.

Ongoing Commitment to Beneficiary Protection

The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting South African citizens from online fraud. Beneficiaries are encouraged to stay informed, verify sources before clicking any links, and report suspicious activities immediately.

SASSA’s latest campaign forms part of its broader efforts to ensure that social grants are delivered securely and reach the intended recipients without disruption or exploitation.
