More than 210,000 SASSA grant beneficiaries across South Africa are facing delayed payments this month due to ongoing eligibility reviews — with notable disruptions reported in Bizana and several communities within the Alfred Nzo District Municipality.
According to SASSA, the delay stems from a targeted process to verify income sources of individuals suspected of failing to declare other earnings — a violation of the Social Assistance Act.
In the Alfred Nzo region, local offices in Bizana, Flagstaff, Mount Ayliff, and Ntabankulu have seen increased foot traffic as frustrated beneficiaries seek clarity. SASSA spokesperson, confirmed that second payment dates are being issued, and urged beneficiaries to update their information at their nearest office to avoid suspension.
“As we begin the July payment cycle, SASSA continues to review grants for those who did not declare income,” the spokesperson said.
What Affected Beneficiaries in Alfred Nzo Should Know
Beneficiaries under review must respond within two months or face temporary suspension of their grants. If no further action is taken within an additional month, grants may be permanently cancelled, and cases could be flagged for potential fraud.
In Bizana’s CBD, some grant recipients who had queued at payout points said they were told to return the following day. One resident from KwaNikwe expressed concern for vulnerable elders without transport. “It’s hard watching old people get turned away after waiting all morning.”
Local ward councillors in areas like LuRholweni, Nomlacu, and Mbinzane have begun notifying residents through loudhailing and WhatsApp groups, urging them to verify their details at local offices.
Why Is This Happening?
The review process follows a directive from National Treasury, after irregularities were found in earlier audits. SASSA says it is under pressure to ensure only qualifying individuals receive grants — particularly in the wake of increasing financial strain and system abuse.
Steps for Beneficiaries in Bizana & Alfred Nzo:
- Visit the Bizana SASSA Office or regional office in Mount Ayliff
- Bring ID, proof of residence, and documents about any income (if applicable)
- Make sure your contact number and address are current
- Use the SASSA online platform or mobile app to check status
- Call the national helpdesk at 0800 60 10 11
While the reviews are necessary to protect the integrity of the grant system, many vulnerable residents in Bizana and surrounding villages are urging SASSA to improve its communication and outreach. The agency remains firm: beneficiaries who fail to update their information risk losing access permanently.
