In the 2025 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced increases to all permanent SASSA grants, offering some relief to millions of beneficiaries facing rising living costs.

The grant top-ups come as part of a broader effort to strengthen South Africa’s social safety net while ensuring grants remain sustainable in the long term. These increases will take effect in the 2025/26 financial year, and apply to older persons, children, people living with disabilities, and other grant recipients.

New SASSA Grant Amounts for 2025/26

According to the National Treasury, the following monthly grant increases will apply:

Grant Type Previous Amount New Amount (2025)
Old Age Grant R2,185 R2,315
War Veterans Grant R2,205 R2,335
Disability Grant R2,185 R2,315
Care Dependency Grant R2,185 R2,315
Foster Care Grant R1,180 R1,250
Child Support Grant R530 R560
Grant-in-Aid R530 R560

“These increases are essential in maintaining the buying power of social grants and cushioning the most vulnerable against inflation,” said Minister Godongwana.

What This Means for Beneficiaries:

  • The Old Age Grant sees a R130 boost, a welcome increase for many pensioners struggling with rising food and electricity costs.
  • Child Support and Grant-in-Aid both increase by R30, helping households with young children and dependents.
  • Disability and Care Dependency Grants match the Old Age Grant at R2,315.

These changes apply automatically — there is no need to reapply if you are already receiving a qualifying grant.

Reminder:

The SRD (R370) grant remains separate and is not part of these increases. However, it has been extended to March 2026.

More Adjustments Coming?

While these increases have been welcomed, many civil society groups argue that they are still not enough to meet the basic needs of the poorest households. Further adjustments may be considered during the October 2025 Mid-Term Budget.
