SASSA has reassured millions of grant beneficiaries that no social grant payments have been suspended, following public concern over the ongoing social grant review process. The agency confirmed that all approved grants remain valid and are being paid as scheduled.

The 2025/26 review process, mandated by law, is targeting beneficiaries whose financial, legal, or medical circumstances may have changed. These reviews are vital to ensure that only eligible South Africans continue receiving support.

A key improvement this year is the introduction of a 4th-day payment system for reviewed beneficiaries. This allows them to receive their payments without interfering with the main payment cycle that runs between the 2nd and 5th of each month. If you received your payment during this time, no action is required.

“We are not halting payments. We are making sure the system remains fair, accurate, and focused on those who truly need support,” a SASSA spokesperson explained.

To better detect fraud and false declarations, SASSA has expanded its data partnerships with registered credit bureaus, allowing the agency to verify reported income against credit applications and payroll records.

Additionally, SASSA is working to improve service delivery by:

  • Sending over 140,000 SMS notifications for reviews,
  • Expanding office capacity to reduce long queues,
  • And developing online self-service tools for future automation.

These changes are in line with National Treasury compliance conditions, which require SASSA to enhance grant verification, implement biometric systems, and ensure accurate reporting of beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries are reminded of their legal responsibility to report any changes in income or personal details. Failure to do so may lead to the suspension of grants or demands to repay funds received unlawfully.
