SASSA and Postbank Provide Update on Gold Card Replacement Ahead of Deadline
Postbank CEO Niki Mbengashe

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank held a media briefing to provide an update on the progress of replacing the old SASSA gold cards with new black Postbank cards. With just days remaining before the March 20, 2025, deadline, officials confirmed that over 1.1 million beneficiaries have successfully transitioned to the new system.

Progress on Card Replacement

Postbank CEO Niki Mbengashe reported that while the card replacement project began in September 2024, most of the swaps have taken place in 2025. Notably, 46% of the 1.1 million card swaps occurred in February alone, demonstrating the efficiency of the system. In the first two weeks of March, an additional 200,000 beneficiaries have received their new cards.

Bash also assured beneficiaries that despite concerns, the system is functioning smoothly, with increased capacity at service points to handle the high demand.

Clarifying the March 20 Deadline

Officials emphasized that after March 20, the old SASSA gold cards will no longer function. However, this does not mean beneficiaries will lose access to their grants. Key points include:

  • Grants will still be deposited into beneficiaries’ accounts, even if they have not yet collected a black card.
  • Beneficiaries can continue collecting their black cards beyond March 20, with Postbank increasing service sites nationwide.
  • For those who do not have a black card by April’s grant payment cycle (April 3–5), they can still withdraw funds over the counter at 500+ Post Office branches using their ID document.

Efforts to Address Challenges

Recognizing the initial congestion at card replacement centers, SASSA and Postbank have expanded service sites and deployed roving teams to improve efficiency. However, some areas, like the Western Cape, continue to face logistical challenges due to staffing shortages.

Additionally, selected retailers, including Checkers, Usave, Boxer, Pick n Pay, and Spar, are assisting in the distribution process. Beneficiaries can check the nearest card replacement site by dialing 1203210#.

Home Visit Assistance for Vulnerable Beneficiaries

A special process has been implemented for bedridden beneficiaries who are unable to visit service sites. These individuals, or their caregivers, can register at their nearest SASSA office with a medical certificate, social worker letter, or clinic letter to request a home visit. Once verified, a designated proxy can collect funds on their behalf.

SASSA’s Assurance: No One Will Be Left Behind

SASSA Acting CEO reassured beneficiaries that no one will be left without their grant. The transition is being closely monitored to ensure that all recipients continue to receive their payments without disruption.

As the March 20 deadline approaches, beneficiaries are urged to collect their new black cards as soon as possible to avoid inconvenience. The card replacement process will continue into April and beyond to accommodate those who have not yet transitioned.

For further assistance, beneficiaries can contact SASSA’s call center or visit their nearest service point.
