The Ministry of Police has taken an action following rape allegation involving a trainer at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Training Academy. The incident, which reportedly occurred on May 6, 2025, involves the alleged rape of a trainee by the instructor, encouraging an instant condemnation from officials.
In response to the incident, the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) has ensured that the victim receives essential medical care along with emotional and psychological support. The accused instructor was arrested shortly after the allegation was made.
Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, expressed disgrace at the situation, stating: “We welcome the immediate removal and arrest of the SAPS instructor. This alleged act represents not only a criminal offense but a disgraceful abuse of authority and a serious breach of trust. To exploit a young recruit who has dedicated themselves to serving our nation is wrong.”
Mchunu emphasized that such actions do not reflect the values and ethics expected of police officers within the SAPS and undermine the integrity of the entire force. He repeated that the tireless efforts of thousands of honorable officers should not be overshadowed by the actions of one individual.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been assigned to handle the investigation. “We urge them to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served. It is crucial that internal processes are followed swiftly,” Mchunu added. “Let this serve as a clear message: no one is above the law.”
