The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is advancing infrastructure projects in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM), generating jobs and strengthening local small businesses.
So far, 70 people have been employed, including 43 local labourers, 10 appointed SMMEs, and 27 skilled workers such as security staff. This demonstrates SANRAL’s effort to ensure that road development benefits nearby communities through both job creation and enterprise growth.
Last month, during the road closure at Abattoir Bridge, 24 residents from Ward 4, Cambridge Village were temporarily hired to manage vehicle and pedestrian movement. Local leader Phiwe Mehlo coordinated the initiative, making sure the process ran smoothly and that residents were actively involved.
Work continues on key structures across BCMM, including Beaufields Bridge, Bonza Bay Bridge, Gonubie River Bridge, Emerald Hill Bridge, and Abattoir Bridge. At Abattoir Bridge, local SMME Sifolo Services has completed concrete repairs, while subcontractor MBR is replacing damaged bridge bearings.
Further construction is set to begin at Farmers Hall Bridge on 3 September 2025. The project has also expanded to include major upgrades at Gonubie Interchange, Nahoon Interchange, and Brickfields Bridge. The overall programme is planned for completion on 20 February 2026.
