The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has announced a massive investment of around R50 billion in road projects nationwide, with 96 tenders worth R35 billion currently under evaluation and 86 contracts worth R15 billion already awarded.
The Eastern Cape will benefit from 24 construction projects valued at an estimated R3.8 billion, while other regions will also see significant investment:
- Northern Region (Gauteng, North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga): 34 tenders worth R16.5 billion
- Western Region (Western Cape and Northern Cape): 12 tenders worth R2 billion
- Eastern Region (KwaZulu-Natal and Free State): 12 tenders worth R11.7 billion
- Head Office: 14 tenders worth R839 million
SANRAL CEO Reginald Demana hailed this achievement, citing improved operational stability and the adoption of the Interim PPP in 2023. The agency aims to surpass the R51 billion worth of tenders awarded in the 2022/23 financial year.
Notable projects in the Eastern Cape include:
- N2 Wild Coast Road: A R20 billion project with four major contracts underway, including the Msikaba and Mtentu bridges
- R56 Matatiele: A R1.2 billion contract improving the 39km stretch between Matatiele and the KwaZulu-Natal boundary
- N2 KwaBhaca to Ngcweleni River: A R1.2 billion improvement contract on the N2
These projects have created jobs, stimulated local economies, and developed skills, with many more opportunities on the horizon. SANRAL will advertise an additional R1.8 billion worth of tenders in the coming weeks.
