On 11 November 2025, the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), in partnership with the Umzimvubu Local Municipality, hosted a vibrant stakeholder engagement session at KwaShinta Community Hall in Ward 20. The meeting focused on the upcoming N2 Mzeke River to KwaBhaca road project, which promises to boost local development and safety.
What Happened
The engagement, led by councilor Ndanele Mdzinwa, Speaker of Umzimvubu Local Municipality, brought together community members, SMMEs, youth, people with disabilities, and military veterans.
The session outlined the project’s goals, emphasizing local participation and empowerment.
“We are pleased to have SANRAL and their consultant, Mbawula Civil Projects, here today to explain the project details to our residents and outline the implementation process,” said Councilor Mdzinwa.
Representatives from Mbawula Civil Projects, including Mr Dumisani Maxaxuma, detailed the technical and social aspects of the project. He described it as a “walk-away project,” designed to minimize risks for schoolchildren and ensure long-term community benefit.
Official Response
Mr Maxaxuma also confirmed that nine local SMMEs from KwaBhaca would take part in a four-month training and development program. The initiative aims to build capacity, create jobs, and ensure that local businesses gain hands-on experience in major infrastructure delivery.
“This project is not only about roads, it’s about empowering communities and equipping local enterprises with lasting skills,” said Mr. Maxaxuma.
Officials reiterated their commitment to transparent communication and ongoing consultation throughout the construction phase.
Community Impact
The event drew traditional leaders and ward representatives from Wards 16, 17, 19, 20, and 21, who expressed support for the project. Many highlighted that the improved road will enhance connectivity, road safety, and access to economic opportunities.
The N2 development is expected to stimulate local growth, reduce travel time, and improve transport links for residents and small businesses in the region.
