A farewell ceremony was held in Ntlamvukazi to mark the conclusion of a two-week outreach initiative led by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). . The campaign, headed by Brigadier General Mdutywa, brought vital services to the region, assisting over 40,000 residents.
Healthcare, social grant support through SASSA, and services for former mine workers formed the core of the programme. Community members praised the operation for its efficiency and called for similar future interventions.
Humanitarian group Gift of the Givers contributed significantly, donating 50 wheelchairs and 1,000 food parcels to aid vulnerable households. Faith-based organisations also extended support. The Methodist Church Connexion delivered eight tons of food and clothing, while the Natal North Coast District Methodist Church sent three shipments of blankets and garments. The South African Council of Churches in the O.R. Tambo region added further clothing donations.
The campaign closed with the Project Owethu Tournament awards ceremony, where winners received trophies, medals, sports equipment, and cash prizes in recognition of their participation.
SANDF personnel visited schools during outreach to promote discipline and introduce learners to career paths in the defence force. Doctors, engineers, and social workers joined the effort, offering educational talks on health, substance abuse prevention, and social wellbeing.
Organisers expressed hope that the initiative’s impact would extend beyond its duration, creating lasting benefits for the Ntlamvukazi community.
