SA U20 Squad Ready for Crucial AFCON Opener in Egypt

The South African U20 men’s national team is settling down in Cairo as they prepare for a crucial opening match in the CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for Sunday, 27 April 2025.

Coach Raymond Mdaka and his charges arrived in Egypt on Thursday, 24 April 2025, where they expect a challenging environment bolstered by a passionate home crowd supporting the hosts.

Team Spirit High as Tournament Kickoff Approaches

Speaking ahead of the opener, SA U20 vice-captain Patrick Autata expressed confidence about the team’s readiness for the continental stage.

“We are excited to be playing in this tournament. We are mentally prepared for the hurdles and challenges we will face. Our goal is to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup and to go as far as possible — even to win it,” Autata said.

The camp’s morale remains high, with players focused on overcoming the tough competition and representing South Africa proudly on the international stage.

SAFA Leadership Shows Support in Cairo

Senior officials from the South African Football Association (SAFA), including Pius Nqandela and Gerald Don, visited the U20 squad in Cairo to offer encouragement and support.

The visit coincided with their presence in Egypt for CAF Champions League duties, where Mamelodi Sundowns faced Al Ahly and Orlando Pirates met Pyramids FC.

Their presence provided an additional morale boost to the young squad ahead of Sunday’s vital encounter.

Tournament Stakes: World Cup Spots on the Line

The biennial U20 AFCON will run from 27 April to 18 May 2025, with the top four teams earning qualification to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Defending champions Senegal will be looking to retain their title, but South Africa’s youthful side is determined to make its mark and secure a coveted World Cup berth.
