What Happened
Deputy President Mashatile delivered a keynote address to local and international delegates, acknowledging global leaders, premiers, ministers, civil society, development agencies, and representatives of international organisations.
He opened by reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to Ubuntu as a guiding principle in shaping its G20 engagement. He explained that South Africa’s Presidency embraces inclusivity, consultation, and collective responsibility values aligned with the G20 Social Summit’s aims.
Mashatile described the National Dialogue process as a platform for South Africans to confront poverty, inequality, and social divisions. He further explained that this work will contribute to a new social compact expected to guide the country for the next 30 years.
He also stressed Africa’s continuing challenges, including underdevelopment and conflict, while urging international partners to support peace, debt relief, fair trade, and stronger representation for the continent.
Official Response
The Deputy President stressed the need for global cooperation, arguing that nations must act together to solve shared challenges across economics, security, climate, and inequality.
He said that South Africa’s G20 Presidency is rooted in the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” which he believes symbolises the country’s commitment to inclusive development and fair global governance.
Mashatile also addressed the growing influence of the Global South, noting that Africa is asserting itself as a contributor to innovation, economic growth, and governance. He commended young people for shaping G20 policy through the Y20 Communiqués.
He called for stronger efforts to confront gender-based violence, describing it as a severe social crisis affecting communities throughout Africa.
The Deputy President outlined core G20 priorities for 2025, including:
• strengthening disaster resilience
• ensuring debt sustainability
• mobilising finance for a Just Energy Transition
• advancing inclusive growth through critical minerals
He also introduced three cross-cutting task forces focused on inclusive economic growth, food security, and responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Community Impact
According to Mashatile, the Social Summit offers civil society a direct line to global decision-makers. He explained that this platform allows communities, NGOs, and engagement groups to influence the G20 agenda before leaders adopt formal declarations.
Mashatile encouraged continued involvement beyond the Summit to ensure that commitments translate into real improvements in people’s lives. He also acknowledged the role of Africa’s citizens, youth, and civil society groups in pushing for a more equitable world.
He thanked all delegates and reiterated South Africa’s readiness to lead global efforts toward justice, equity, and sustainable development, stating that unity and cooperation remain essential for shaping a better future.
