On 15 October 2025, the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, in partnership with the Nyandeni Local Municipality and the Nyandeni Kingdom, commemorated the United Nations International Day of Rural Women at a community gathering in Nyandeni, OR Tambo District Municipality. The event was held under the theme, “Supporting rural women and girls to respond to climate change through agricultural production, food security, and natural resource management.”
What Happened
The celebration brought together women farmers, community leaders, and government representatives to recognize the contribution of rural women in promoting sustainable agriculture and climate resilience. Speakers emphasized how women play a vital role in ensuring food security and managing natural resources at the community level.
Official Response
Officials from the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development applauded the achievements of rural women who are driving progress in agriculture and rural development. They noted that empowering women farmers remains central to building a strong and inclusive rural economy. The event also reflected on Chapter 6 of the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030, which focuses on developing an integrated and inclusive rural economy.
Furthermore, leaders from the Nyandeni Kingdom expressed support for continued collaboration between traditional structures, government, and communities.
Community Impact
The commemoration celebrated the success stories of women farmers who are transforming local agriculture despite challenges such as drought and limited resources. In addition, it inspired young women to take part in farming, climate-smart initiatives, and leadership roles within their communities.
The event ended with a call to strengthen partnerships that promote gender equality, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in rural areas.
