The Mbhashe Local Municipality is hosting a Rural Economy Stakeholder Engagement on 6 November at its executive boardroom. The meeting, attended by Council Speaker Babalwa Majavu, follows the launch of the Rural Economy and Skills Program, aimed at driving sustainable local development.
What Happened
The engagement brings together government officials, community leaders, and industry experts to discuss the next phase of the Wattle to Biochar and Syngas Project. The initiative targets economic growth and environmental sustainability within the Mbhashe area.
Two potential sites — Hlobo Forest and Ngonyama Forest — have been identified for the project. Stakeholders will conduct site visits to assess their suitability and ecological safety before implementation begins.
“This initiative marks a new era of innovation in our rural economy,” said councilor Majavu. “It combines job creation, green technology, and community empowerment.”
Official Response
Municipal officials mentioned that the program supports the Eastern Cape’s broader development agenda. It aims to create local jobs through sustainable forestry management and renewable energy production.
“The Wattle to Biochar and Syngas Project is not just an environmental initiative — it’s an opportunity to transform livelihoods,” a project representative said.
Community Impact
Local residents have welcomed the plan, hopeful that it will open up skills training and employment opportunities in forestry and green technology. The project also promises to promote sustainable land use and environmental protection.
The engagement and site assessments, the Mbhashe Municipality moves closer to turning its rural innovation vision into action.
