The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is an agency of the Department of Transport responsible for road safety in South Africa. Motorists are advised to service their vehicles and renew their licenses well ahead of the holiday rush. Alarmingly, a total of 624,333 vehicle license discs are set to expire at the end of November, with the Western Cape leading the count at 152,531. KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga also feature prominently on the list, highlighting the urgency for vehicle owners to act.
Freight and public transport operators are also encouraged to ensure their drivers are fit, healthy, and have renewed their professional driving permits, while checking the roadworthiness of their vehicles.
For added convenience, drivers can renew their vehicle discs online through the National Traffic Information System (Natis) website, with the option to have them delivered to their preferred address.
In addition to ensuring vehicle and document readiness, the RTMC reminds motorists to inspect their brakes, lights, and tires before embarking on journeys. Planning trips with an eye on construction updates and weather forecasts is also essential, especially as many accidents occur at night.
Finally, the RTMC encourages motorists to always carry a valid driving license, as driving without one can lead to penalties.
