A suspected armed robber was fatally shot while two others fled following a shootout with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Madeira, Mthatha, on Saturday, 3 May 2025.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 13:30 when TRT officers were traveling along Bridge Street, heading from Norwood toward the Mthatha CBD. Officers came upon an alleged robbery in progress involving three armed suspects accosting a pedestrian.

Upon stopping their vehicle, officers attempted to intervene, prompting the suspects to flee into nearby bushes under the N2 bridge. TRT members gave chase on foot.

During the pursuit, one of the suspects allegedly opened fire on police, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The suspect was fatally wounded in the shootout. A revolver and ammunition were recovered at the scene and will be sent for ballistic testing.

The two remaining suspects managed to escape and disappeared into the surrounding bush. No police officers were injured during the incident.

A case of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition has been opened. Additionally, an inquest docket has been filed and will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, confirmed the incident and said a manhunt is underway.

“We are actively searching for the two suspects who remain at large. SAPS remains committed to fighting serious and violent crime in the OR Tambo District,” said Modishana.

Members of the public with any information that may assist in the arrest of the remaining suspects are urged to contact their nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
