The alarming rise in the abuse of women and children in Mthatha has led to a significant police march through the town, aimed at raising awareness and curbing the escalating violence. While the Lusikisiki region, once notorious for such incidents, has seen a decline in violence, the O.R. Tambo sector is now grappling with an increase in these crimes.
The march, which commenced at the PRD building and concluded at the Mthatha City Hall, was organized by local police and community leaders as part of a broader initiative to address the growing concerns.
Colonel Sivuyile Nqaphi, the national chairman of Men for Change, emphasized the urgency of the situation. “We are here in Mthatha today because we recognized that the level of violence is rising significantly. We needed to take action,” Nqaphi stated. He further explained that the purpose of the march was to reduce violence and encourage men, particularly those who remain silent, to speak out and take a stand against abuse.
O.R. Tambo District Police Commissioner Major General Phumzile Cetyana highlighted the importance of educating men on what it means to be a “true man”—one who does not resort to violence against women and children. “We have decided to host a men’s debate focused on three key topics: teaching men not to beat, not to harass women and children, and understanding the true essence of manhood,” Cetyana said. He also noted the disturbing trend in the Lusikisiki region, where many women have been killed after being accused of witchcraft.
Adding his voice to the call for change, King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, the BaThembu tribal king, urged men to treat women and children with respect. “Women respect men, and in return, men must treat women and children well to promote peace among our people,” King Dalindyebo said.
The march in Mthatha is a clear indication that the community and its leaders are committed to combating the abuse of women and children. However, it also serves as a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents in the region.
Great initiative from the Police, the crime is way too much now 🥺
