In a somber turn of events, the world has bid farewell to Mbongeni Ngema, the esteemed South African playwright, and musician. Ngema, aged 68, tragically lost his life in a head-on car collision on Wednesday evening while returning from a funeral in Lusikisiki, located in the Eastern Cape. It is with heavy hearts that we report that he was a passenger in the vehicle.

The news of Ngema’s passing was confirmed by Abbey Makoe, the spokesperson for the Ngema family.

Mbongeni Ngema carved an indelible mark on the cultural landscape, leaving an enduring legacy that resonates with the spirit of resistance during the challenging era of apartheid and the liberation struggle. Widely recognized for his exceptional talent, Ngema was best known for his award-winning works, notably the iconic productions “Sarafina” and “Woza Albert.”

Zizi Kodwa, Minister of Sport, Arts & Culture tweeted “I’m saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Mbongeni Ngema, one of South Africa’s great playwrights, directors, lyricists and composers. Dr Ngema’s internationally acclaimed work, from Sarafina to Stimela sase Zola, told distinctly South African stories and experiences.”
