As Easter approaches, religious leaders across South Africa are being called upon to champion road safety among congregants embarking on trips.  With many travelers planning journeys in private vehicles or hired public transport, the message is clear: safe travels can prevent tragedy.

In past years, the Easter holiday has seen its share of devastating accidents, claiming the lives of many who were simply seeking spiritual fulfillment. Considering this troubling history, faith leaders are encouraged to weave road safety themes into their sermons, reinforcing that ensuring safe travel is a collective responsibility, not just the government’s concern.

“Pastors play a crucial role in shaping community behavior,” noted a local church leader. “By emphasizing the importance of road safety during services, we remind our congregants that every individual has a part to play.”

Organizers of church trips are also urged to accurately plan their journeys, ensuring that drivers take necessary breaks to avoid fatigue. Additionally, public transport operators must prioritize the safety of their vehicles, ensuring they are roadworthy and not overloaded with passengers.

Authorities are not taking these concerns lightly; traffic law enforcement and South African Police Service members will be heightened on key routes, with officers monitoring compliance with road regulations. However, motorists are reminded that road safety truly begins with them.
