President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to comments made by US President Donald Trump about South Africa’s participation in the G20.The Presidency described the remarks as regrettable and reaffirmed the country’s standing as a founding G20 member.
What Happened
The statement follows the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Johannesburg, which was widely praised by attending Heads of State and Government.
South Africa hosted the summit during its G20 Presidency, which concludes with the handover of responsibilities to the United States for 2026.
Because the US did not attend the Leaders’ Summit, G20 instruments were formally transferred to a US Embassy official at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
The Presidency said the summit delivered a strong declaration supporting multilateralism and global cooperation.
South Africa’s Position
The Presidency stressed that South Africa’s G20 membership is recognised by all member states.
It said the country participates in the forum “in its own name and right” and does not accept insults about its status in the global community.
South Africa values the G20 as a platform built on consensus and cooperation. Officials noted that the United States was expected to participate in all meetings during South Africa’s Presidency but chose not to attend the Leaders’ Summit “of its own volition.”
However, South Africa welcomed the large participation of US businesses and civil society groups in related G20 activities, including the B20 and G20 Social.
Diplomatic Concerns
The Presidency said it is disappointing that President Trump continues to take punitive positions against South Africa despite repeated attempts to strengthen diplomatic relations.
It warned that these actions appear to be based on “misinformation and distortions.”
“South Africa respects the sovereignty of all nations and will never demean another country,” the statement said.
Way Forward
Ramaphosa reaffirmed that South Africa will remain an active and constructive G20 member.
The Presidency called on all G20 countries to uphold multilateralism, promote equal participation, and safeguard the forum’s values.
South Africa will continue to engage international partners while defending its sovereignty and global standing.
