President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the official Vote of Thanks on behalf of Southern African heads of state and government at the 45th Ordinary SADC Summit, which concluded on Sunday.
In his address, Ramaphosa congratulated President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar, who assumed the chairmanship of SADC for the 2025–2026 term. He praised Rajoelina’s vision for accelerated industrialisation, agricultural transformation and inclusive energy transition, saying these priorities “resonate deeply with the aspirations of our region.”
Confidence in New Leadership
Ramaphosa said Madagascar’s chairship was historic and expressed confidence in President Rajoelina’s ability to guide SADC through complex issues.
“You have shown us the true mettle of your leadership ability. We know that SADC is in good hands,” he said.
The President noted that South Africa, which now joins the SADC Troika leadership, will fully support Madagascar in advancing the region’s integration agenda under SADC Vision 2050.
Recognising Outgoing Leaders
Ramaphosa saluted the contribution of President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, the outgoing chairperson, citing his government’s work on trade integration, food and energy security, conservation, poverty eradication and health initiatives.
He also commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania for her leadership of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation during a challenging period.
Applauding Regional Institutions
The President congratulated Elias Mpedi Magosi on his re-appointment as Executive Secretary of SADC, noting the Secretariat’s “professionalism and vision” in preparing the summit. He described the Ministers of Foreign Affairs as the “true heavy lifters,” with special thanks to Madagascar’s Foreign Minister Dr. Rafaravavitafika Rasata.
Praise for Madagascar
Ramaphosa extended gratitude to the government and people of Madagascar for the successful hosting of the summit — the first time in 20 years it has been held in Antananarivo.
“From the seamless logistics at the Ivato International Conference Centre to the vibrant side events, Madagascar has showcased its capacity as a regional leader and reliable partner in African cooperation,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Ramaphosa confirmed that South Africa will host the 46th SADC Summit in August 2026, inviting heads of state and government to gather in the country next year.
