The OR Tambo Women’s Network, alongside external stakeholders including the Qumbu Business Fraternity, hosted a Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) awareness campaign in Caba A/A, Mandyimba location. The event followed the disturbing case of a now-14-year-old girl, who was raped by her step-grandfather at the age of seven, stressing the urgent need for community action against GBVF.

What Happened

It is alleged that the case came to light in October 2023 when a local teacher noticed signs of distress in the victim. The matter was reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the perpetrator was arrested and charged.

At the campaign, Sergeant Mtyingizane, the Women’s Network Champion, urged the community to unite in the fight against GBVF, saying:

“We cannot allow silence to protect abusers. Communities must be brave enough to act and protect the most vulnerable among us.”

The programme also included handing over a new home structure, household appliances, fencing, and groceries to the survivor’s family, providing both physical and emotional support.
