Two inspiring women from the Eastern Cape made history this week. Qhawekazi Mazaleni, 24, from Dutywa in Amathole District, was crowned Miss South Africa 2025 in a dazzling ceremony on Saturday, 25 October. Just days earlier, 29-year-old Mellisa Nayimuli, born in Butterworth, was named Miss Universe South Africa.
The provincial government called their success a “celebration of the power of dreams, hard work and perseverance.”
Premier Oscar Mabuyane praised them as “beacons of hope and true ambassadors of the province.”

The Women Behind the Crowns
Known fondly as Qhawe, Mazaleni is more than a beauty queen. She’s a speech therapist, children’s book author, and digital creator. Her academic work focuses on inclusive education, and she holds a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology with a specialisation in autism.
One of her standout achievements is a book written to help children with cerebral palsy learn and communicate better.
Meanwhile, Nayimuli, who has both Xhosa and Ugandan heritage, is an accomplished film and television producer. She recently completed a documentary titled Chosi-Chosi, showcasing her passion for African storytelling.
She will represent South Africa at the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand next month.

Why It Matters for the Eastern Cape
These wins highlight the continued rise of talent from the province. Both women follow in the footsteps of Zozibini Tunzi, the Eastern Cape native who won Miss South Africa and Miss Universe in 2019.
This legacy of achievement gives hope to many young people in rural communities.
Premier Mabuyane added:
“They represent the spirit of our youth who continue to rise above challenges. We’re confident they will inspire others with humility, compassion and leadership.”
