The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced the postponement of the highly anticipated Nedbank Cup Quarterfinal match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United, originally scheduled for 9 March 2025 at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
The decision comes after the PSL discovered that the stadium had accepted a booking for an Under-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier, scheduled to kick off at 15:00 on the same day. This contradicts the stadium agreement that granted the League exclusive control of the venue for the quarterfinal fixture. Despite urgent engagement, no confirmation was received from the stadium management to uphold the agreement.
The League stated that hosting two matches at the venue within such a short timeframe was logistically impossible due to the Nedbank Cup regulations and security protocols. Extensive safety measures—including SASREA categorization, security planning with SAPS, and compliance with the PSL Safety and Security Manual—had been executed under the assumption that only the quarterfinal would take place.
“It would be reckless for the League to proceed with the match and in so doing put at risk the safety and security of Nedbank, the participants, SAFA match officials, the public, and League staff,” the PSL said in a statement.
As a result, the stadium agreement has been canceled, and the match has been postponed. The League has committed to conducting a full investigation into the matter.
The PSL apologized to all fans and stakeholders who were preparing to attend or watch the game. A new fixture date will be announced soon, and fans are advised to keep their match tickets as they will remain valid for the rescheduled match.
