The Port St Johns Municipality ended Disability Rights Awareness Month with an important community gesture. The Special Programmes Unit handed over two wheelchairs to residents in Nkwilini Ward 02 and Dangwana Ward 07.
Officials said the initiative promotes dignity and mobility for people with disabilities. They added that rural residents face many barriers when they do not have proper mobility devices.
The municipality delivered the wheelchairs directly to the beneficiaries’ homes. Officials guided families on how to use and care for the devices. They said mobility improves access to services and boosts independence.
Disability leadership joins the municipal team
Ms Maza, the Treasurer of the Disabled People’s Organisation, joined the handover. She helped distribute the wheelchairs and spoke to the families. She encouraged them to use support structures offered by disability organisations.
She said partnerships between government and disability groups are important. These partnerships help fight stigma and promote equal treatment in communities.
Municipal leaders said the handover forms part of ongoing work. They want to ensure that people with disabilities feel valued and included. They also aim to strengthen awareness across all wards.
Municipality commits to long-term support
The municipality said Disability Rights Month reminds leaders to protect vulnerable groups every day. Officials committed to expanding programmes that support people with disabilities. They want more residents to benefit from similar interventions.
