President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed a new panel to oversee the selection of South Africa’s next National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP). The process will mirror the open and transparent approach used when appointing Advocate Shamila Batohi, whose term ends in January 2026.
What Happened
The President has named Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi, as the chairperson of the selection panel. Other members include the heads of the South African Human Rights Commission, the Commission for Gender Equality, the Public Service Commission, and the Auditor-General.
Representatives from the Black Lawyers Association and the National Association of Democratic Lawyers will also take part. The panel will call for public nominations, shortlist and interview candidates, conduct vetting, and recommend three names to the President within three months.
Official Response
President Ramaphosa said the NDPP plays a crucial role in defending the rule of law. “The National Director must lead the NPA with integrity and independence, without fear, favour, or prejudice,” he stated.
Community Impact
The open selection process aims to build public confidence in the National Prosecuting Authority. By ensuring fairness and transparency, government hopes to strengthen the justice system and safeguard accountability in South Africa’s democracy.
