Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has reassured the public that the rape case of a 7-year-old girl, affectionately known as Cwecwe, is being treated with the urgency and seriousness it deserves by law enforcement and government departments.
The child was allegedly raped in October 2024 at Bergview College in Matatiele, under the Alfred Nzo District Municipality. The Premier condemned the “heinous crime” and expressed his solidarity with the public, while extending heartfelt support to the victim and her family.
“This tragic incident has inflicted deep trauma not only on the child but on her loved ones and the broader community,” said Mabuyane, commending the resilience of Cwecwe’s parents during this period. He confirmed that social workers have been providing psycho-social support to the family since the incident occurred.
In a decisive response, the Eastern Cape Department of Education has issued a notice of intent to deregister Bergview College. The move aims to ensure the safety and wellbeing of learners and is being pursued in accordance with legal procedures.
Premier Mabuyane also referenced another disturbing incident involving a minor named Alu in November 2024, in which the suspect was swiftly arrested and appeared in court the same month. He welcomed the proactive approach taken in that case and urged the South African Police Service to act with the same resolve in the ongoing Cwecwe investigation.
The Premier acknowledged the involvement of Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, who has pledged law enforcement’s commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation and a strong case before the courts.
Mabuyane added his voice to those of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) activists and the public, demanding “Justice for Cwecwe.” He affirmed that the provincial government would continue supporting the family and tracking the case closely.
“The protection of children’s rights remains non-negotiable. Their safety must be a collective duty—one shared by government, families, communities, and the justice system,” Mabuyane concluded.
