In the aftermath of a tragic outbreak of violence in the town of Addo, Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has called for calm, unity, and lawful conduct following deadly clashes between local residents and foreign nationals. The altercation, which occurred in the Valencia area on Sunday, 25 May 2025, resulted in three fatalities and ten injuries, according to provincial authorities.

The violence reportedly erupted as a revenge attack by local residents after a fellow community member was allegedly murdered during a fight outside a tavern between locals and foreign nationals on Saturday, 24 May.

Premier Mabuyane condemned the retaliatory violence, warning that acts of mob justice only deepen divisions and destabilise communities.

“Violence and retaliation have no place in our communities,” Mabuyane said. “We must remember that our strength lies in our unity and shared humanity.”

He confirmed that law enforcement agencies have been deployed to restore order and investigate the full circumstances of the incident. Residents are urged to cooperate with police and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The Premier also highlighted the Eastern Cape’s proud history of diversity and inclusivity, encouraging communities to continue building safe and respectful environments for all, regardless of nationality or origin.

“Let us protect the lives and dignity of all who reside in our province,” he added.

The Eastern Cape government extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. Officials are monitoring the situation closely.

Any individual with information that could assist in the investigation is urged to come forward.
