Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has placed Thandolwethu Manda, the Head of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), on leave following serious allegations of rape and sexual abuse circulating on social media.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation and Manda’s influential position, Premier Mabuyane stated, “I am convinced that placing him on leave will best serve the provincial government.” This decision reflects a commitment to upholding accountability within the government during these troubling allegations.

In response to the situation, Mabuyane has assembled a high-profile investigation panel composed of notable figures: Mr. Petros Majola, Ms. Pamela Tshwete, and Ms. Yvonne Badi. This panel is tasked with thoroughly examining the allegations against Manda, with a focused inquiry into the operations of the DPWI. The Premier also extended a call to action for victims of workplace harassment, urging them to utilize the newly formed panel to share their experiences. “I encourage anyone who has faced such abuse to report it to the police, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable,” he added.

This decisive action not only illustrates the administration’s commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct but also shines a light on the broader issue of workplace safety and justice in the Eastern Cape, reinforcing the need for a culture of accountability and support for survivors.
