Pondoland has produced some of the most remarkable talents in South Africa, individuals who have excelled in various fields and made their communities proud. Today, we spotlight a few of these celebrities who have left an indelible mark on our nation.
One such figure is the late M. Thompson Magawana, born and raised in Lugwijini location in Bizana. A legendary athlete, Magawana won the Comrades Marathon more than once and also secured victory in the Two Oceans Marathon. His record from the 1996 Two Oceans Marathon remains unbroken, a testament to his enduring legacy.
Another sports legend is former Mthatha Bushbucks midfielder Mr. Mongi Rula, also known as Mkhuthuzi. Respected by opponents like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, Rula was a formidable presence on the soccer field. In a recent interview, he shared that he retired from football in 2019 due to a knee injury. After a brief stint with Zulu Royals in 2000, his injury worsened, leading him to leave the club. In 2001, Rula transitioned to coaching, leading The Guys FC in the Castle Regional League from 2001 to 2004 with notable success. Eventually, he returned to his roots in Flagstaff to fulfill his role as a traditional leader. Today, he heads the Inkosi Mongi Rula Foundation, which hosts annual soccer tournaments, attracting scouts from top clubs like Sundowns. This year’s tournament will be held on September 14-15 at New Rest Stadium in Lusikisiki, featuring 16 clubs vying for the championship. Sponsors are encouraged to support this significant community event.
Pondoland is also home to the legendary traditional musician Inkunzemdaka from Bizana, who remains a beloved figure residing in his hometown of Izikhuba. Equally cherished is Mr. Siyabonga Shibe, known to many as Qhabanga from the popular television show Uzalo. Shibe, who has roots in Topozo, Bizana, is another proud product of this region.
In the world of sports, former Banyana Banyana star Nandipha Mlomo of Ludeke Location in Bizana stands out, as does former Kaizer Chiefs player Ntiyantiya, both of whom brought honor to their community through their achievements.
Comedy has also found its hero in Nomakhisimsi UnakaMjwentru, a beloved comedian from Bizana who continues to entertain and inspire.
Lastly, we celebrate Afro-soul musician Siphokazi Marhaqana, born and bred in Lusikisiki. Known for her hit song “Amacala,” she has become one of the most celebrated artists from the region. Her success story continues to inspire many.
As we reflect on the achievements of these Pondoland stars, it is essential to recognize the potential impact of inviting them to local events as motivational speakers or program directors. Their presence alone could inspire and motivate our youth, showing them that greatness can come from our own communities.
