Three men were arrested in Mthatha on Friday, 6 June 2025, after police acted on intelligence about a planned business robbery in the area.

Members of the Tactical Response Team, operating under the OR Tambo District, received a tip-off regarding suspects in a vehicle suspected to be involved in criminal activity. Around 12:30 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle at a fuel station in the Fort Gale residential area.

Upon approaching and searching the vehicle, police discovered an AK-47 rifle with its serial number erased, along with two empty magazines. Further checks revealed that the vehicle was linked to a case registered in Rondebosch.

The suspects, aged between 22 and 38, were taken into custody and charged with possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and possession of an unlicensed firearm. They are expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 9 June 2025.

Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, commended the officers for their swift and effective action. He praised the team’s ongoing commitment to reducing crime and making the district a safer place.
