A 59-year-old police captain, working as a firearms trainer at the Tshwane Police Academy, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court facing allegations of rape. The officer, who has served the South African Police Service (SAPS) for 31 years, is accused of assaulting a 20-year-old female trainee.
According to the allegations, the incident occurred in April 2025 when the complainant passed by the accused without saluting. Following this incident, the captain allegedly reprimanded her for what he claimed was misconduct. The complainant explained that she had not noticed him at the time.
On May 6, 2025, the trainee was reportedly called to the captain’s office while walking back to her bungalows with her platoon. Upon entering the office, she claims he locked the door behind her and threatened to dismiss her over the previous incident if she did not comply with his demands. Allegedly, he instructed her to undress while he did the same and proceeded to rape her. After the assault, the captain told her to get dressed and leave.
Following the incident, the trainee reported the matter to authorities at the academy, prompting immediate action. She received medical attention and was referred to the Laudium Thuthuzela Care Centre for further support.
The accused was arrested the following day, May 7, 2025, and the case has since been handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation. In court today, the case was postponed to May 23, 2025, for an opposed bail application, as the serious nature of the allegations continues to raise concerns within the community.
