The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the high-profile murder of popular musician and entrepreneur, DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka.

In a media statement issued on Sunday, police said the suspects, aged between 28 and 34, were arrested in various parts of Gauteng over the past week. The breakthrough follows a lengthy and complex investigation by a multidisciplinary team under the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni.

DJ Sumbody was killed in a drive-by shooting on 20 November 2022 while travelling on Woodmead Drive, Sandton. The attack, which also claimed the life of one of his bodyguards, shocked the nation and sparked widespread calls for justice.

“The investigation team has been working tirelessly behind the scenes,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. “These arrests are a significant step forward in ensuring justice for the victims and their families.”

According to SAPS, the three suspects face multiple charges including murder, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 July 2025.
